When I finish reading, my head falls back against the back of the couch. This girl has me all tangled up, and I’m worried it’s already too late. Too late to be cautious. Too late to go slow.
I’M A TRAMP. OKAY, THAT’S a little harsh. Lots of girls go out with lots of guys. It’s called dating. I glance up from my drink, across the table at my latest blind date. Damn Chad. This is it. This is the last one.
The guy seems nice enough. Not as nice as Jack, but more pleasant than any of the other guys. Definitely not as nice as Lenox. Or even “letter boy,” as Chad and I have taken to calling him.
Charlie isn’t being rude to the waiter, or me, or yelling on his phone, or feeling me up under the table. It’s good, but it’s all messed up. He’s talking, but I’m not listening. The guilt started to get to me about twenty minutes ago. Twenty minutes ago, I ordered a Mexican Martini with extra jalapeno olives…extra dirty. Dirty. Just thinking about being extra dirty makes me giggle.
It also makes the guilt I’m feeling worse because I’m thinking of being dirty with another guy. No, two other guys. Wait. Just to be clear, not two guys together, but separate. One doesn’t even have a face, and one has everything. I giggle again. That’s when I hear my date; his voice pulls me out of my alcohol induced daydream.
“Umm, are you okay?” he looks a bit mortified.
I stare at him thinking about how to answer that question.
Well, Charlie, I think. Not really. I’m on a date with a nice enough guy. But, Charlie, the problem is I can’t stop thinking about these other two guys. And I’m tipsy. A little tipsy and if I keep drinking these delicious concoctions full of tequila then I will be even less okay. Shit. He’s still waiting for my answer. Charlie thinks I’m nuts. I just saw the look flash in his eyes.
“I’m sorry,” I blurt out. “You’re great. This place is great.” I raise my arms in the air and open them palms up like I’m Vanna White presenting a prize on the Wheel of Fortune. I am nuts. Oh, shit. I’m the “bad” date this time. I think I might cry. “Oh, God. I’m sorry.”
Charlie smiles at me sympathetically. “It’s fine, Tessa. I get it. Maybe we should call it a night,” he suggests.
“I’m sorry. Are you sure? It’s not…”
He puts his hand up as he stands. “Please don’t say it,” he pleads with a grin.
Fudge nugget. I was about to say it’s not him, it’s me. Dear lord, I hate myself right now. No, I hate Chad. This is his fault. And the letter boys. And Lenox Malone’s fault.
“Okay, I won’t,” I try to grin back.
“I’ll take you home,” he offers. He reaches his hand out to me.
Shaking my head, I politely decline his offer. “It’s fine. I think I will finish my drink and call an Uber.
